Dining room wall art

The dining room gathers family and guests around the table. A painting there starts conversations: generous flowers, still lifes, warm colours that go with a good meal.

Where to hang art in the dining room

The wall above the sideboard or console is the obvious place: centre the work on the furniture and leave 20 to 30 cm between them. On the wall by the table the work can be larger; since it is seen from a seated position, hang its centre a little lower than elsewhere, around 140 cm from the floor.

Warm tones such as ochre, terracotta or gold echo the wood of the table and the evening light. Floral compositions and still lifes have always belonged in dining rooms; a large landscape makes a narrow room feel wider.

Near an open kitchen, canvas is a good choice: it dusts easily with a dry cloth. Every work comes in several sizes and can be previewed to scale on your wall before you order.

Frequently asked questions

What size of painting above a sideboard?

About two thirds of the sideboard’s length: 100 to 120 cm for a 160–180 cm sideboard. Narrower, the work looks lost; wider, it overwhelms the furniture.

One painting or several in the dining room?

One large format is often enough. On a long wall, line up two or three works of the same height with 5 to 8 cm between them: from 2 works a −10 % discount applies automatically, −15 % from 3.

How do I care for a painting near the kitchen?

A soft, dry cloth is enough for the canvas and the frame. Avoid household cleaners and direct moisture, and do not hang the work right above a source of heat.
